Going Natural

I love the natural look.  And, no, I'm not talking about my hair and letting all the grays show through or anything like that.  What I really mean, is that I love a natural decorating style.  Some nice crisp whites and earthy elements...the perfect combination of rustic and refined.

Little by little, I'm restyling my home. Removing patterns and color or anything that feels too feminine or just simply not right...replacing them with more texture and things with a natural feel.  Over the past week or so, while I was out and about, I found some great decorating items that fit the look I love.

Do you remember when I was trying to decide what I should use for a table in here? Well, I found this little stool that I think is just about perfect. Oddly enough, it's almost exactly like the one I had in this spot before, but it has one important difference, the wood is raw...worn all nice and smooth.  Really, it just about makes my heart sing when I look at it.

Then, I started thinking about this little abandoned cardinal nest that was located in a hydrangea tree right outside my dining room window.  Earlier this year, it held little eggs and babies, but since they're gone now, I decided to bring it indoors to enjoy its delicate construction and pretty, natural form.

While I like color, I've come to the conclusion that the only kind I can live with is one that can be easily removed, like in some pillows or flowers.  This pretty purple plant caught my eye at, of all places, the grocery store. Can you believe it?  The grocery store.  I love the flowers.  They have a little bit of wildness or something about them.

Lastly, I came across this little vintage berry basket.  I've been searching for some wooden ones for so long now, thinking that I'd never find any and would ultimately have to order some new ones.  Happily though, my eye spied this well-loved little charmer with its worn metal edge.  Perfect for the look I'm going for.

Perhaps I could lounge around in this chair, eating strawberries out of that little basket, while I enjoy those flowers.  Yep, that sounds like a good idea...maybe I could read a book while I'm at it too.

Well, there they are...a few finds that, I think, compliment each other and fit my natural style.  I love when everything comes together just the way I see it in my mind's eye...especially since it seems like that rarely happens :)

Have a good day!

xo Tricia

  6. Tricia,
Your corner is BEAUTIFUL! The stool and the pot of flowers look amazing...lots of texture and so natural.
I am the same with color. I can't live with it anymore except for the flowers I bring in. My rooms of white, beige and grays are much more comforting to me. And I'd rather have a bird's nest than a piece of art anyday.
And I'll say it again...your photography is stunning!

Hope your summer is going well...it looks like it is. :)

  11. I love your photos and of course your style....I like to keep my house natural and simple, but adding color with things I love, flowers, photos....there are so many things to find right outside the front door these days, so it is quite easy now to find some inspiration and bring it indoors! Lovely post Tricia =) Xoxoxo

  33. I love the look of the raw wood and it's just perfect for that comfy corner. All of your photo's look like they belong in a magazine and are just outstanding.

I have to say I make smoothies just about everyday too. In fact I make them in my Vitamix as well, and let me say that baby is old lol, I think it's one of the first ones they ever made and I've had it well over 15 years (maybe older)and it still working! My recipe isn't quite like yours and really is almost completely different but along the same lines (if that makes sense ?) I do use frozen strawberries though. I will have to post mine sometime. Yours sounds really good too. (I also use my Vitamix to make whole wheat flour from the hard red wheatberries, please tell me do you do that too?

Also, talk about coincidence! The Rainier cherries were buy one get one free last week, so I had to take advantage of that and I just love them too.

(talk about eerie lol) but I guess you beat me to all the great blog post ideas!

love your precious little boy with being such a good model for you!

  44. Oooh!! What an absolutely beautiful set of photos & styling you have created, Tricia! :-) And I am just crazy over the the lighting in the 3rd photo down! I am a little obsessed with lighting lately, and I should be getting in Tartlette's (blog) "Plate to Pixel" book in the mail this afternoon - I can't wait to absorb her every word!! ;-) You have everything infused with such an organic, pure simplicity that I adore.. and yep.. that raw wood stool is too cute! I am so glad you found a wood splint berry basket.. they are the best props.. I found a stack at my local antique shop. I feel the same way about only adding color that can be switched out as the mood strikes. In our first home together (a condo), me & my husband painted our bathroom hunter green & the guest room burgundy.. that was my first big lesson in keeping things neutral.. I got sick of those wall colors fast (a big what was I thinking!) lol! Have a great wkend~

  46. I love your natural decor, you just gave me an idea: I'm re-decorating my bathroom, I have a little space that I didn't know what to do with, I was thinking about putting a small table, a plaster column that I already have, but I'm loving the idea of a stool, besides is more functional in a bathroom. Thank you for the inspiration! New follower!

  55. Lovely! Your little grocery flowers are "angelonia," and they come in that lavender, in pink, and white as well. I plant a little bunch of 'em early spring and they keep blooming like crazy straight through to October. They're inexpensive and look charming all summer in vases, and mix with other flowers for sweet arrangements. Your bench is perfect there.

Love the light streaming in on your chair--perfect spot for a glass of vino...or maybe just a nap after all those strawberries.

  56. Hi Tricia,
I love your style. Taking a lovely bird's nest and making it part of your decor is wonderful. Now I will be on the lookout for bird's nests...empty ones, of course.
