Hello...here I am. I can't believe it's been over a week since I've posted! Time sure flies when your not having fun...lol. I've been busy, but have also felt a little uninspired lately. I did manage to do a little Autumn decorating around the house this week....mostly I just scattered a few pumpkins here and there and then added some bittersweet to the mix for a little Fall flair.
Just as an aside...see those cute napkins up there? I got those at Pottery Barn the other day on clearance. Doesn't the color of the stripe match that pumpkin perfectly? I love it when things like that happen.
Anyway, I took my new napkins, a pumpkin, and some bittersweet and gourds and put together a little vignette in the only room it seems like I ever show you...the dining room. Then I took a few shots in the evening and a few shots the next afternoon for a little unscientific lighting experiment, just to get a better feel for how light affects the mood and look of a photo.
I generally try to take my photos in the morning or towards evening since the light is softer, giving a nice glow to the pictures and the least amount of shadows. These first three photos were taken later in the day than I would normally choose. This room is on the West side of my house and towards the end of the day it will get strong bands of light, which I find to be too distracting and harsh, making some areas of a photo look too bright and others too dark.
Of the three, I prefer the first photo...even though it is a little dark. It has more of a cozy, warm feel and sun is acting kind of like a spotlight on the items I want you to notice the most, the bittersweet and the pumpkin. The second photo has too many shadows around the base of the pumpkin for my liking and third photo feels fine, although I don't really care for the light that is falling across the top of the sideboard.
These last two photos were taken in the afternoon when it was rather cloudy, which is something I pretty much avoid at all costs, since I have a hard time getting pictures to turn out to my liking in that type of weather. For example, in the photo below, while I like the composition, the lighting feels too cold to me, especially in the area near the top of the photo. I can hardly stand to look at that part.
Now, this next photo, I really, really like...even though it was taken at the same time of day. What?! Hmmm. Why I wondered? What's different? I had to really look at them both to figure out the answer.
See in the shot below how the top and bottom parts of the photo are more out of focus in comparison to the photo above, softening the edges? It seems to diminish the harsh, cool look of the light. Also, because it contains fewer items, just the pumpkin, bowl and bittersweet, it has more of a minimalist look which seems to work well with this type of light and your eye more easily gravitates toward the center of the photograph, don't you think?
Okay then, let me see, are there any big, overall conclusions that I can glean from my experiment? No, not really, except for maybe I need to learn how to use my camera settings better :) I do, perhaps, have some general thoughts. It appears that a band of light could be a spotlight or create a more intimate mood, as long as it's not too harsh and too bright. And if should I run into a situation where I have cool, yet bright, light, it might be nice to have the edges out of focus to soften the look of the light.
My camera is also set to auto white balance and I haven't really tried to make adjustments to that setting too much. There have been occasions where I've changed it to allow for overcast skies, but then I felt like my photos had a bit too much of a yellow tone. I'm thinking I need to play around with that setting some more and figure things out better.
Well, lovely people that's that. Do you have any thoughts, ideas or helpful hints about photography and lighting you're dying to talk about? I'd love for you to share :)

Just GORgeous.
ReplyDeleteA magazine cover.
Wow!
I change my white setting ALL the time. I makes a huge difference. Our dining room and kitchen are north facing and come out looking so cold ALWAYS on auto.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your post, Tricia - even when you're not feeling inspired!

Good morning! I'm still having coffee here..
ReplyDeleteThat first pic looks like it should be on a mag COVER sweetie! Oh boy.. loved all you wrote here!! I could talk about light and photography forever! I can so resonate with you on these thoughts! I have been waiting, watching, and exploring light so much lately! I have found my best light to be in my kitchen (lots of big windows.. very light-filled in there) at around 9:15 in the morning.. it is very smooth and flattering light I think... after 11:00 it starts to get very unflattering.. harsh.. shadowy and then I find that being in diffused shade outdoors looks nice in pics. Ha.. going to be hard to do with winter arriving! Gorgeous pictures!
and I forgot to add, I typically leave my WB setting on "daylight" - I haven't noticed a huge affect when I turn it to "cloudy" etc.. on cloudy days and yes, like you I prefer not to take photos on cloudy days.. if I do, I will up the ISO and EXP COMP. And Tungsten when I'm doing indoor-event type photos. Lately though.. I am really into outdoor diffused light.. midday sun & subject under the shade of trees... LOVE that light look! ;-) Ok I will stop rambling here. Have a nice day Tricia!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful as always...my big question, where did you get the bitter sweet, can't find it anywhere around here:) I so wanted some white pumpkins and bittersweet! I love the lighting on all the shots, I especially like the close up just like you. Happy day my friend, have a good one.

beautiful photos! I've been really struggling to figure out my new camera. I really need to take an amateur coarse to learn about apertures etc!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty. I love the combination of objects and the difference in light. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteHi my sweet Tricia, the pictures as usual, are beautiful. I have also been feeling blah lately and I think it has a lot to do with this gloomy weather here in Ontario...bbbuuuttt...on a 'rosy note' I got a new camera for my birthday last week and even though I have nooooo clue what to do yet, I will be looking through your older posts for some tips ...Thanks T for always inspiring even when you dont feel inspired yourself...xox

So pretty, love all the light, and your decorations are gorgeous. Love those napkins.
ReplyDeleteLove this post, Tricia. :) Your pictures are beautiful... my favorite is the one with the chalk board, but they're all beautiful. Love those napkins,too... need to get me some!

Such gorgeous gorgeous photos Tricia!! I don't know how to change the white setting- lol- I should probably tinker with my camera too! Beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteHi Tricia - I love your simple Autumn touches. Sometimes less is more. I appreciate you taking the time to share your insight in how you took these lovely photos, why you liked one more than another, the subtle differences. All of these tips are so helpful to someone wanting to learn more about photography! Have a great Fall day! B :)
ReplyDeleteMy friend you are inspiring even when you don't feel it. This weather is so uck here with all this rain. Your photos are gorgeous and thank you for your tips, they are VERY helpful.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day, your home is beautiful, your photos are beautiful and YOU are beautiful.
xoxo
Such wonderful photos, as usual. I have no advice to offer because 1) I don't think you need it, and 2) each situation is so unique and different that it would be hard to say exactly what works. I did read on a pro photographer's web site once that he keeps his WB on Cloudy for everything, but I can't remember his reasoning. I keep mine on auto and that usually works fine for my Canon. On rare instance where the tint is off I can fix it easily in Lightroom or Photoshop since I shoot in raw.
ReplyDeleteThat gray pumpkin is so beautiful and unusual! I know what I'll be looking for this weekend. :)
I need to learn my camera settings better, too! I want to see if I can do the auto-white balance thing. I love the clean fresh look that your pictures have. :)
ReplyDeleteI think your photos are always gorgeous - mine, however, always end up looking like snapshots. I wish I was more artistic.
ReplyDeleteLove your pumpkin, and great deal on the napkins!

ReplyDeleteWow! That's generally all I can say when I see your decorating and your photos, Tricia! I'm with those who say this should be on the cover of a magazine, too.
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are just beautiful! I wish I had something to add regarding photography but it isn't really something I know much about. I do have my problems taking pictures on gray days in certain rooms and I am trying to work on that since we have so many dreary days coming up!!
ReplyDeleteThat pumpkin is SO sweet. I love all the neutral ones that have started to sell lately Just beautiful!
Hope you have a wonderful day!!
XO,
Jane
Beautiful. Your grey pumpkin is exactly what I wanted this year but have not been able to find one anywhere yet. I only have a canon powershot so I have no clue as to what you are talking about with the camera info. My daughter has the fancy canon and is in her 2nd year of photography class. So someday when I get my fancy canon she will teach me. ox
ReplyDeleteA Awesom post and photos! I LOVE the first photo , the focal point is so crystal clear , the composition is perfect , the angel is right ...the light , perhaps a little darker , but it makes an excellent contrast ...yes, a magazine cover , ( high quality )
ReplyDeleteI have always always enjoyed seeing the beauty through you precise eye.
Love this post dear Tricia, your pictures are magic...kiss Nely!
ReplyDeleteStunning pics.....as usual!
ReplyDeleteLoving the grey pumplins I'm seeing every where.
ReplyDeleteThe grey pumpkins are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful <3
ReplyDeleteYour autumn decorations are simply beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWarm regards, Ira
Hi Tricia!
ReplyDeleteLove your beautiful and informative post!!! My hubby took photography classes in college and is always trying to teach me tips, but I never listen! lol Maybe because my camera is old school! :) You're right about taking photos either earlier in the day or later in the evening. The worst place for me to take pics is in my kitchen - LOW light! :( The best place is in our dining room because it has two large windows. Anyway, thanks for always being so inspiring!!! I love your autumn decorating - heck I love your decorating ALL seasons! :)
XOXO's,
Jessie
Well, I thought the first photo was the cover of a book, and the rest were simply gorgeous, so I obviously do not have your eye. I am in love with your pumpkin - it's a beautiful color and the texture is amazing. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Thanks for the inspiration and the photo tips! Here from Feathered Nest Friday.
ReplyDeleteWe are off to get pumpkins
ReplyDeletewhen my son comes out of
his guitar lessons. This is
so beautiful. I especially
like the last photo. You need
to be photo styling!,
xx Suzanne
Tricia, you know I always love your layouts, all magazine quality. You always manage to do simplicity at it's best. I have a lot of problem with light in my home, faces north & south with the kitchen on the north (boo hoo). Found this really interesting article on white balance that you might enjoy reading. I saved it so I could try, right now I seem to be stuck on auto WB. http://www.clickinmoms.com/blog/color-by-kelvin-a-better-approach-to-white-balance/
ReplyDeleteabsolutely beautiful! love the napkins!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are always beautiful. I'm not a photographer, but I seem to get good shots outside, midday.
ReplyDeleteYour sure seem pretty inspired to me Tricia!!
ReplyDeleteThese are just gorgeous. The way you have composed each of these is so beautiful.
I kind of feel the same as you do now. for me, I thinkit is because most of the leaves are now history, and there is a lot of gray. :-(
I am sure I can look forward to a lot of white soon though!!
Your autumn decor is beautiful. I love your experiement too.
ReplyDeleteI really need to try working with my camera more. All I really do now is wait to take photos on sunny days and turn the flash off.
Beautiful photos, perfect styling, you may be feeling uninspired but your doing a fine job inspiring me! Thanks
Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI don't mess with the white balance much at all, but I'm an ISO changing fool. I shoot in manual all the time now, so I'm constantly experimenting and tweaking.
Trial and error, that's the only way to go. :-)
Hugs,
Anne
I enjoyed your study on light. I agree and love the first shot! I don't mind the coolness in the first shot of your second bunch. I find the light on the side of the pumpkin beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI do fiddle with the white balance at times. Mostly for shots in my kitchen and I will use tungsten. Or cloudy on overcast days. I don't really understand the difference between cloudy and shady though. Sometimes I will take several shots with different WB to see the differences. I will still sometimes adjust the color cast in PSE. That is very easy to do or I will use a colored filter.
Beautiful photos! I really need to experiment with my camera more. Thanks for the info, it's inspirational!

What amazingly gorgeous photos and decor. LOVELY!

When I grow up I want to be a good photographer like you! :) Your photos always make me want to gaze for hours. Love them.
ReplyDeleteSubtle differences yet I can see what you mean. All you photos look great but you have made some valid judgements which become evident as you look closely.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos, as always. You are so talented! I always have the hardest time figuring out what time of day the light is best. Each room seems to be different and it drives me insane!
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for all the tips. I enjoyed seeing your thought process on the subtle differences in the last two photos. Love that pumpkin too. Great color for the more neutral Halloween decor nowadays.
ReplyDeletei really love the first photo, but think they all are lovely : ) it is amazing how beautiful that grey pumpkin looks in that while bowl. I am sooo jealous of your bittersweet, it doesn't grow here in california and at the florist, it is too yellow : (
ReplyDeleteDearest sweet tricia, i am LOVING your fall decorations! So beautiful! I really want to get me some of those adorable small white pumpkins but they sell it so expensive here in Malaysia. Have a lovely merry happy weekend! Looking at all your beautiful photos always make me smile! Love to you!
ReplyDeleteJust another feast for the eyes, in my opinion! But you've given some really helpful tips here - lots to think about.
ReplyDeleteI change my white setting all the time, but I still have a lot to learn about my camera and photography.
ReplyDeleteYour decorations are gorgeous!
Happy weekend!
Hi Tricia, these are all so beautiful! I think you've managed the light very well. Like you, I don't like shooting on cloudy days but at times it's inevitable ... especially this time of year. I change my white balance all the time depending on the light that's available. It can help to warm up or cool down your image. But don't feel you have to use "cloudy" just because it's overcast ... experiment to find the setting that you prefer in each lighting condition.
ReplyDeleteLove the napkins and the pumpkin!! Such a great colour.

Well, I love all of your pictures! I am a beginner and have just recently taken my camera off of Auto! Scary to me! I found this post to be very helpful!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks just beautiful Tricia...your photo's are amazing! Love those PB napkins too! Can you come over and style my table now too? hugs...Deb
ReplyDeletelove the pictures...all of them. I'm still learning so much....AS IN, I know NOTHING about picture taking.
ReplyDeleteI think they all look fantastic! I'm pinning them to pinterest.....for Fall inspiration!
Tricia,
ReplyDeleteLove your clean & adorable decor.
I'll check my camera to see if it has the setting you use...your images are always so pretty.
Your new blog look is lovely! Just bought the same pottery barn napkins but with the burnt red trim. (The hubs is going to ban me from your blog if I keep seeing things I simple must have!) :)
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty photos....again!!!! Love your greyish pumpkin. So pretty and I think I'm heading over to Pottery Barn :)
ReplyDeleteHi Tricia! I think they all look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYour vignette is just PERFECT, Tricia! I love all the elements you brought together in just the most beautiful way!
ReplyDeleteHi Tricia, I love your Fall decorations and the colours are lovely, so different from all the oranges and reds, so subdued. I like them. I found and am now following you through Show And Tell Friday, and will visit often. Please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Chris
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew more about my camera. Yes, the pumpkin photo tricks are very pretty!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are so beautiful. I love the pumpkin surrounded by white, it really makes it pop. As for camera tips...I still use a cheapo point-n-click ;o( so wish I could get a big girl camera...maybe one day.
