A Girl, a Sunset and a Caterpillar

As the days grow longer and summer draws near, the sights and sounds of the world beckon me closer, especially those that dusk brings.

I head outdoors with my girl by my side. Golden bands of light trickle down around me and warm my skin...the wind whispers through the leaves, birds flutter among the tree tops and frogs begin their evening serenade.

We walk along, feet bare, taking in the world around us. The sound of children playing can be heard in the distance. I feel small, little pebbles beneath my toes and then, the prickle of grass. My little one is searching for the flutter of butterflies, forever entranced by their mosaic of colors and soft, delicate wings. She stops. It isn't a butterfly that has caught her interest, but a caterpillar.

She gently picks it up, runs her fingers over it's smooth, little body and peers at it closely. "Caterpillars turn into butterflies," she tells me.

She lets it slowly wiggle across her hand and laughs at the way it tickles her skin...taking delight in all that it does.

After spending a few moments watching the small, little creature, she gets up and places it on the branch of a tree. "He needs to be safe and have leaves to eat," she tells me. I laugh in agreement.

I take her hand as we head toward the house. All the while she chatters...revealing little things she's learned about nature in her five, short years and, as I often do, I think to myself about how wonderful it would be to live someplace warm and sunny...a place that feels like summer all year round.

  4. Oh so very, very sweet. I love seeing your little one and how she embraces nature. If you lived someplace warm all year round, you might not appreciate the warmth as much (at least that is what I keep telling myself)

  15. Love this post. Reminds me of the summer when my youngest caught a caterpillar and built it a home. It formed a cocoon and she was so excited to see a beautiful butterfly emerge. I didn't have the heart to tell her she had befriended a "tent caterpillar" that would soon become a moth. When the moth emerged she wasn't disappointed in the least. She named it Little Flyer and released it.

  20. Your post is so beautifully poetic. It brought back memories for me of being a child in the Rocky Mountains and summer finally coming in June after having snow and cold since the previous September. Ever wild flower was so magical because they were so fleeting.

If you ever want a wonderful place where you can garden year round and have almost-summer 9 months out of the year, I highly recommend the San Francisco Bay Area. ;-)

  34. Wonderful story and photos. We are blessed with a summer climate about 8 months of the year, sometimes a little too hot. So much summer means we don't has the lush spring and summer you enjoy.

  35. First off, your daughter is a hero! 'Cause I'm so scared of caterpillars, yet she can hold them in her hand, how nice is that!

"I think to myself about how wonderful it would be to live someplace warm and sunny...a place that feels like summer all year round."

Tricia, you are very welcome to visit my country, Malaysia, where we have only one season all year long, summer! Well, the not so hot summer and the super hot summer.. Oh, do come here sometime, we have lots of beautiful places for you to photograph!

Regards to both you and your family,
    Nic. :)
